An announcement was made today by the NPD, Nippon Professional Dueling and the Super Junior League. The two leagues will run a joint dueling card on [x.xx] out of the Kaibadome, titled New Sun Rising. The event will be centered chiefly around three championship duels, two for the Super Junior League's new championships, the Super Junior Championship and the Super Junior Tag Team Championship. The third will be a defense of the Action Dueling World Championship by the undefeated champion, Akaba Reiji. Since his defeat of the first champion Isabel Marias in January, five months ago, Akaba Reiji has been unstoppable, scoring dominant victory after dominant victory while taking on all comers as he promised he would.
And today, we can confirm who his opponent at New Sun Rising will be. While announcing the event, the NPD also revealed that the champion's next title defense will be his rematch with the first champion, Isabel Marias. Since her loss, Marias has seldom stepped into the ring in preparation for this rematch and was even at one point fined by the NPD for attacking Akaba Reiji outside of a duel back in March...Marias has yet to make any kind of public comment since the incident.
As of right now, the card for New Sun Rising includes:
(NPD) Action Dueling World Championship Action Duel: Akaba Reiji (c) vs. Isabel Marias
(SJL) Super Junior Championship Four-Way Action Duel: ???? vs. ???? vs. ???? vs. ????
(SJL) Super Junior Tag Team Championship Gauntlet Match:
- Ryozanpaku (I. Kachidoki, T. Hayate, L. Zheng, M. Akiyama, H. Khang)
- Y. Grave, S. Singer
- A. Tsurugi, E. Wakahisa
- Landrobe, Garum,
- LDS (M. Koutsu, H. Shijima, Y. Todo)
(NPD) Action Duel: Timur Vesik vs. Strong Ishijima
(SJL) Action Duel: Shun Kurosaki vs. Sora Shiunin
Other notes from the day:
- The manager of Timur Vesik, the "Duelist Crusher", Jean-Michel Roget expressed disappointment in the NPD's decision today. He was quoted as saying, "My client has, beyond all doubt, decimated all of the competition available to him in this league and has earned his title shot. We are very disappointed in the league's decision to reward Isabel Marias with a rematch before he gets his opportunity at the championship. We are investigating avenues to rectify this mistake that the league has made as we speak."
- There have been rumors of attempts to revitalize the Riding Dueling scene within Japan, including talk of a new Riding Duel division within the NPD. The former Riding Duel division of the NPD lost popularity as many duelists left after the consequences of the WRGP and was eventually closed down.
- In a recent interview, European Team Dueling Champions Team Niebelung were asked if they would be interested in returning to Japan to duel once more. Team Niebelung are currently the top team duelists and top Riding Duelists in Europe and are the best team that is still active from the top contenders in the WRGP. Mikhail Koivu expressed interest, saying some of the best duels of his career took place in Japan. Team Captain Astrid Ostagaard added that Team Niebelung's message was a global one and that if their path took them back to Japan, they would gladly return to duel them again. Koivu suggested Ostagaard should consider going after the Action Dueling World Championship. Ostagaard had no comment.
- United States Champion Clint Richter, who has been on hiatus after a flare-up of his heart condition during his duel with Timur Vesik has commented on social media, saying he'd like to target New Sun Rising as a return date. To quote Richter, "Dunno if the NDL will let me keep doing the open challenge after I almost had a heart attack in the ring but I'll figure something out. Goal is to defend my championship in Japan. Will accomplish it one way or another."
