[Isabel Marias vs Ikkaku Tachibana]
One of the final duels in the second round of the Action Duel World Championship almost ended in dramatic upset. Ikkaku Tachibana and Isabel Marias faced off in the Action Field Graveyard of Swords - the match started off with a surprise when Marias seemed to be waiting for the referee to decide the life point count when Tachibana asked for 8,000 points. The move caught Marias off guard, but she agreed and the duel stared at 8,000 life points.
Isabel Marias was defensive early in the duel, playing few cards and chipping away at Tachibana's life points slowly, clearly anticipating his key card, Slash Draw. It didn't take long for Tachibana to activate Slash Draw and use a combination to put another copy of the card on top of his deck to trigger its effect and take away a large chunk of Marias' life all at once. At this point, Marias became more aggressive, trying to finish off Tachibana before he drew he managed to set up his combo again. Marias seemed to have the duel under control after she summoned Naturia Bambooshoot, locking down Tachibana's spells and traps, including Action Cards. Marias got caught assuming she had the duel in hand at this point, allowing Tachibana to grab an Action Card, then immediately discarding Effect Veiler from his hand, negating Bambooshoot's effect and then immediately using the Action Card to destroy it. On his very next turn, Tachibana not only summoned Beelze of the Diabolic Dragons, he managed to activate Slash Draw again, emptying the remainder of his deck and using Good Goblin Housekeeping to place one of his used copies back on the top of his deck and triggering the combo again. Marias barely survived the damage from Slash Draw and due to Beelze's immunity to destruction effects, needed to scramble for an Action Card to survive its direct attack.
Marias was notably disheveled at this point, having been caught off guard by Tachibana's explosive combinations and having lost the advantage in both field presence and life points. To add to things, Tachibana's aggressive milling had given him multiple copies of Necro Gardna in his graveyard, insulating him against attacks. Unable to destroy Beelze and unable to deal damage by attacking, Marias went to a defensive strategy, using a combination of Action Cards and defensive traps to fend Tachibana off. Tachibana grew increasingly aggressive, trying to recover his Slash Draws again, but he was unable to execute his combo a third time before he decked out, losing the duel despite a massive field and life point advantage.
The audience reacted negatively to Marias' highly conservative strategy at the end of the duel and Marias herself seemed irate with herself after the duel. Nonetheless, both duelists shook hands after the duel and stayed at the venue for some time afterwards to meet with fans. The consensus among analysts is that Isabel Marias got overconfident in her strategy it backfired, and she wound up stealing a win in the end. She's not expected to be a favorite to advance to the Top 4 at the moment.
