New Sun Rising - Results and Post-Event
[All of the duels at New Sun Rising are finished and the results are up...]
Date: 7.8.2018
(SJL) Action Duel: Yuya Sakaki defeated Shingo Sawatari
(SJL) Action Duel: Shun Kurosaki defeated Sora Shiunin
(NPD) Action Duel: Timur Vesik defeated Strong Ishijima
(SJL) TITLE CHANGE: Ryozanpaku (Isao Kachidoki and Lan Zheng) won the Super Junior Tag Team Championships by last eliminating Yasha Grave and Sylvia Signer
(SJL) TITLE CHANGE: Hayate Tendou won the Super Junior Championship by defeating Yuzu Hiragi, Ryoga Kamashiro and Isao Kachidoki
(NPD) Reiji Akaba (c) and Isabel Marias dueled to a No Contest in a duel for the Action Dueling World Championship
- Full Results for the Tag Team Gauntlet Match:
1) Landrobe and Garum defeat Euphemia Wakahisa and Tsurugi Akashiro
2) Yasha Grave and Sylvia Singer defeat Landrobe and Garum
3) Yasha Grave and Sylvia Singer defeat Yaiba Todo and Hokuto Shijima
4) Yasha Grave and Sylvia Singer defeat Mayu Akiyama and Homura Khang
5) Isao Kachidoki and Lan Zheng defeat Yasha Grave and Sylvia Signer
Notes from the Night:
- The "Mystery Duelist" who challenged Yuya Sakaki turned out to be Shingo Sawatari, a duelist from Maiami City and the Leo Duel School.
- In the tag team gauntlet duel, Yasha Grave and Sylvia Signer appeared to have the gauntlet won when one more surprise team came out, Isao Kachidoki and Lan Zheng, representing Ryozanpaku. Records of the gauntlet's entry showed Kachidoki and Zheng collectively grouped with the rest of Ryozanpaku, who were thought to only have entered one team, Mayu Akiyama and Homura Khang into the Gauntlet Duel, but very shortly before deadlines to enter close, Kachidoki and Zheng changed their grouping and entered as a team themselves, also representing Ryozanpaku. Kachidoki and Zheng drew the final spot, number six, in the Gauntlet and wound up winning the duel.
- Timur Vesik and Jean Michel Roget interfered early into the main event, a duel between Isabel Marias and Reiji Akaba for the Action Dueling World Championship, attacking Isabel Marias and causing a No Contest. The NPD has released a comment saying there will be consequences for Vesik and Roget's actions and a rematch between Marias and Akaba will be scheduled ASAP.
[But the night isn't over for every duelist just yet!
There's plenty of media around to talk to duelists at various points throughout the night. They may be spoken to in the hallways, in the locker room, after their own duels, after the entire night is done and any time or place in between. There's also an area set up with tables and chairs for press conferences.
Your duelist may want to talk about the night they just had...or they may just wanna shove past all the cameras and hit an exit ASAP. Their choice.]

[Sawatari speaks to a reporter outside the locker room. He looks...a little subdued for a second, but he's quickly acting pretty exuberant again.]
Yes, it's true...I lost my debut duel against Sakaki Yuya! But it matters not! I won't be dissuaded! For this is just the first act in the story that is The Perfect Duelist, Sawatari Shingo!
And my story will continue! At the next meeting of the Super Junior League, in the Duel College, I promise you this...you'll see a NEW Sawatari Shingo!
[There's more, but it's mostly just him talking about how awesome his entrance was. The general gist seems to be that Sawatari is officially joining the Super Junior League.]

Isabel stops. She looks at the reporter.]
Those two idiots.
Just made the biggest mistake of their lives.
[The rest of the clip is just Isabel storming out of the building through a nearby door. Apparently she got away from the medical staff!]

The first thing she's asked is how she's doing after the duel since, especially at the end, it looked like she took a nasty bump.]
Uh, well...I went back to the trainers room. And they gave me a test, and I passed it, so. I don't think I have a concussion. My head...really hurts. But the rest of it is just bumps and scrapes and I've been getting those in Action Duels since I was 7, so. [She lets out a breath.] I think I'll be fine.
[She's asked about her last turn and the finish of the duel. She rubs her head.]
I, um. So after I summoned Bloom Prima, I thought I had a good chance of winning that turn. I attacked...and I was trying to stop Hayate from getting an Action Card and...I was trying to stop him without knocking him out, but...he fell out of the ring, so I had to go after Shark instead, and he's really fast, so...he managed to get out of it.
Then after Shark's turn...Isao came back in. And I was trying to get Isao out of the ring so I could take my turn again. [She sighs.] I did the one thing I knew I shouldn't do and I took my eyes off of someone. And...he got me.
[She's asked about Ryozanpaku's continued physicality in duels. She takes in and lets out a huff.]
I don't back down from anyone. So if somebody wants to do something with me during a duel...I'll respond to it! But...I also think. People should be allowed to do their own dueling and they should be able to do it with the expectation that they won't get dragged into a another kind of dueling against their own will. If somebody doesn't want to do that kind of thing during a duel, then I think dragging them into a fight, that's really messed up!
A really close friend of mine was set on getting into this duel, for the Super Junior Championship, and...because he was hurt in a duel with Isao, he couldn't participate. And I think that's really messed up. So. [She shrugs.] I gave Isao a taste of his own medicine during the duel. I dunno if the rules are gonna change, but. But there needs to be some kinda consequences for attacking someone who wants no part of any physical stuff like that in a duel. If this is gonna be a situation where we have to handle each other ourselves, I....really don't have a problem being the one who does it! I'm not really a fighter. I'm not trained in that kinda thing. I just know, I'm sick of watching people who just wanna duel without any of that physical stuff get dragged into it and get hurt.
But...I knew what to expect, tonight. I knew what was coming and I thought I knew how to deal with it. [She grimaces.] I can't use it as an excuse for me.
[She's asked what her plans are now. Her eyes narrow a bit. All of Yuzu's usual exuberance and hot-headedness was just gone in this interview, owing to her exhaustion. But right now...there's definitely a fire in her eyes.]
I'll tell you this.
Hayate hasn't seen the last of me yet.

But between Shark's testy mood and the examiner saying he needed to rest, their questions were left unanswered to their massive disappointment.*

I'm hoping that no lasting damage to Ms. Marias has been done by Mr. Tumir.
::he's then asked about the intensity of Action Duels.::
I personally accept there's going to be pushing of the limits, such as what the Ryozanpaku School does, but we must not allow Dueling to devolve to purely fist fights.
::Next is about his new Duel Disk.::
That will be revealed publicly in the near future. Tonight was meant to be the demonstration for it. That will be postponed.
::He's then asked about rumors he's been seen dating Hiiragi Yuzu in secret. Akaba proceeds to make a face, while popping his knuckles..::
::Pushes past and catches a helicopter that descends from the air. He proceeds to catch it and flies away, climbing up the ladder.::

*Yuya is being interviewed about his duel with his ~mystery opponent~, who turned out to be Sawatari.*
I had a lot of fun with that duel and Sawatari shows promise as a fellow Entertainment Duelist! That duel was exactly the type of duel I want to give to everyone; Something fun and exciting!
*He is then asked on how he feels about Ryozanpaku winning both the tag team championship and the Super Junior Championship, especially with how he was briefly taken out of the Super Junior League due to Isao injuring him.*
I don't really agree with their style of dueling. To me, duels shouldn't be about how much you can hurt an opponent and other duelists shouldn't be forced into their play style if they don't want to. I'm also worried that one day, they may seriously hurt someone with how they duel. They dominate through brute strength, which doesn't suit every duelist. I feel that, as long as Ryozanpaku are using this method of dueling, the Super Junior League needs to balance these different dueling styles so it's more fair to everyone.
I, personally, will continue to stick to the Entertainment dueling that was founded by my dad, Sakaki Yushou, where the focus is creating an entertaining duel which makes the audience cheer and smile. I refuse to use violence on my opponents.
*He is then asked what he plans to do next.*
I plan to continue honing my skills as an Entertainment Duelist and carry on in the Super Junior League! I will also be focusing a lot on my last few months at Duel Academy, leading up to my graduation in September.
After that? Who knows what can happen!!
*As the interview ends, Yuya waves to the camera with a grin to everyone watching.*

::Hayate thinks to himself.::
Ever hear of Mount Tai, in China? It's a holy Mountain there, where the entire mountain is a temple of sorts, but is made of temples that are sort of stations for the trek of pilgrimage. The key ones are the one at the bottom and the one at the top. Right now I think I've cleared the bottom. So I'm gonna go walking up to the top.
['Thoughts on your competition, Mr. Tendou?']
::Again, the young man thought, the lights beaming down on him as the sweat from the day dripped down his body.::
Of course my classmate Kachidoki's definitely skilled, but I think he let his passions get to him a bit too much, I think if he can cool the wild fury thing he's got going he won't be far behind me.
Kamishiro's something else. But that's to be expected of a graduate of a rather high cost and class private school like Umiirukademia. Can't say nothing against the guy, other than Kachidoki had something fierce against the guy.
And Hiiragi, well. She's got to stop acting like, and I know she ain't, but she keeps acting like some rich daddy's girl who's here to get something on her resume for marriage or to get a cushy job at the company board. The move against my Berserkion was just downright embarrassing and probably cost her the Duel in the long run if you want my opinion. She's got to stop doing that if she wants to be treated as a serious contender for the Pros.
But I will give her she's tenacious if nothing else. But you can't walk to the Pros on tenacity alone.
In the end of the day, I was just a bit more lucky and maybe a bit more sly than my competition, and frankly, that's what matters. Skill. Strength. Luck. I was just a bit more skilled at playing the long con despite getting bumped out, and I managed to take advantage of the other three in-fighting. That's all. I ain't gonna let it go to my head.
['Do you think Ryozanpaku's combat is too unfair for the format? And that it's going too far into the realm of street violence?']
::'Damn, they're pressing that point.'::
Frankly? It could be, but that's ultimately on the League itself. We're just abiding by the rules and limits we're being given by the league managers and the companies backing the league. If they want us to back off, we will, and I won't complain. Not every match needs to involve my signature Dragon Suplex. But, hey, there's the whole point of lemons and lemonade. If I can make a better lemonade than the competition, ain't nothing wrong with that.
But I get told we need to scale back, sure, I'll listen and play by those new restrictions.
['What do you plan to do next, Mr. Tendou?']
::The young boy grinned.::
I said it already, I'm gonna start walking the path to the Pro Leagues, using this as my starting point. I'm going to sharpen the identity I want to create going forward.
I'm gonna repeat this again, so all of you here and at home listen:
The one who walks the path of heaven to the Pro Leagues is me, the swift storm incarnate!

...but, as he sets his tag team title on the table in front of him, he has a smirk on his face.]

Alright, so, before anybody asks, I'll explain the logistics of this real quick. [He rubs his nose. He seems to be taking point in this. Maybe 'cause he's the senpai and figures it's his job and all.]
In the last few months, while everybody from our school was dueling to climb the ranks, we dueled in multiple combinations. I partnered with Zheng sometimes. I partnered with Khang sometimes. Zheng and Akiyama partnered together sometimes. I even, unfortunately for me, partnered with Tendou a few times. We all did a handful of duels that way to keep each other fresh.
And then, a couple days before the cut-off to enter the gauntlet duel, I went to Zheng and asked her if she wanted to enter the duel. The two of us had enough duels together to qualify for it. She said yes. So we did it, and we decided not to tell anybody. Because we're the classy types that don't like to talk about ourselves a lot. [Jesus, did Isao just make a joke? He's smiling like he did.]
[Someone asks if Isao entered the gauntlet as a back-up plan in case he lost in the four-way duel tonight. He puts his hand under his chin.]
I entered the gauntlet duel because I wanted to win both championships.
[He gives Lan a light tap on the shoulder.]
You'dve done the same thing, right?
no subject
I did do it for the same reason, senpai.
no subject
So, let me make this clear. I'm...disappointed that I only came away with one win tonight. I haven't given up on the Super Junior Championship just because I lost that four-way duel. I might not be setting my sights on it immediately. Right now… [He holds up his tag belt.] I'm focusing on this. I'm focused on defending this.
[Isao is asked about how he and Lan won the tag belts, entering at the last minute and entering the duel last.]
Well, we didn't know we were going to get the last number, that was random. I fully expected us to have to beat two, three teams and that was what we had planned for. I always had a good feeling about our chances. But when we drew that number... I was fairly certain we were going to win.
I'll make this simple -- if you're asking if we're happy about the way things went? We are. If you think the way we got that win was cheap, that we undercut another team that earned it more tonight? Fine. Feel free to think that. But after tonight, we're going to go out and defend these titles. And we're going to show without a shadow of a doubt that this was not a fluke.
no subject
[ She then turns to face the interviewers with a hard expression. ] We could have faced them tomorrow and the result would have been the same. We are prepared to face anyone at any time. If someone challenged us now and we lost, you wouldn't hear us saying it was "unfair." Challenge... is what this belt means.
no subject
I'll say this to Grave and Singer right now - if you want a rematch, done. Come find us. At the college. On the street. Whatever. We'll give you a duel for these wherever and whenever you want. And this goes to every single team on the roster and anybody who's thinking about making a team and coming after us.
You want a shot at the champions, then take your shot.
[They're asked about their school's physicality in duels.
Isao takes a moment to think about it before answering. He looks at Lan.]
You wanna take this first?
no subject
I do not think that I have an answer that will satisfy the kind of people who ask that question. But I will say that, personally, I see it as being no different from when any duelist has their monster attack another duelist. I also believe that even with the special properties of Action Fields, every duelist goes in with the knowledge that anything may happen while on the field. Their own mistakes, the effects of dueling cards and Action Cards, monster interactions... To me, our "physicality" should only be considered as another hazard of Action Dueling.
[ She pauses. ]
Again, though, that is my personal stance on it. I can not speak for all students of Ryozanpaku. I think that is obvious, but I want to state it again to make sure it is heard.
[ Clearly, this answer is a little rehearsed. Even so, it puts a strain on Lan. It shows by how tightly her fists are balled into her lap, and how adamant she is on looking straight ahead. ]
no subject
Alright, I'm gonna go off track a bit before I answer this.
I know that when people think about our school and our dueling, they think about me more than anything. I know there's an image of me as a "wild animal", assaulting people during duels and sending them to the hospital afterwards.
...a little over a year ago, I participated in a tournament in my hometown called the Maiami Championship. The winner of that tournament moves up to the Youth division, and moving up to that division is the key to becoming a pro duelist. I made it to the finals of that tournament. I lost, to a duelist from LDS. That loss did two things - it meant that I was stuck in the Junior Youth division and it brought significant shame upon myself and my school. For the last year, those two facts have driven me - possessed me. And when I arrived in the Super Junior League, my goal was, above all, to rectify that loss and become a champion.
With hindsight, I know there were moments I went overboard. [He taps his hands on the table for a second.] To Yuya Sakaki and Shun Kurosaki -- I'm sorry that I injured them and forced them to lose time in this league and, probably, an opportunity to duel for the championship themselves. I'm sorry. If I were Super Junior Champion, I'd give them both title shots as soon as I could. But I'm not the Super Junior Champion, so, all I can do is apologize.
But I'm only going to apologize for my own individual conduct as a duelist, not for my school's dueling or for my fellow students' dueling -- before now, I was taught to duel emotionlessly, without applying any part of myself except what I needed to win to my cards. After that, when I started getting more desperate, I started dueling with anger. I don't want to do either of those things anymore. I want to take this. [He takes his deck out and slaps it on the table.] And this. [He picks up the belt and places on the table.] And I want to duel with pride. Pride in myself, in my cards, in my partner and in my dueling.
From this moment on, the two of us are going to represent our school, our league, these championships and ourselves with dignity and pride. You're going to see our form of Entertainment. You're going to see what two duelists at their absolute physical peak are capable of and you are going to see us revolutionize both Action Dueling and Tag Team Dueling. You asked me if this was a backup plan. [He holds up his belt.] This is not a backup. This is not a consolation prize. This is not second place. We are going to take these and with our dueling, we are going to make these the most prestigious, the most respected championship in the world. You are going to see us in the spot Reiji Akaba is in right now.
I'm going to say this point-blank. I am the best duelist in the Super Junior League. And I asked Zheng to be my partner, [he puts his hand on her shoulder.] because I knew nobody in this league is as dedicated to their own dueling as she is. And from this point, you are going to see us become the best team in the world.
[He glances at Lan.]
You got anything to add?
no subject
No. [ Her voice sounds distant and hollow, so she swallows. Her voice comes out stronger, at least. ] No, I do not, senpai.
[ Later on she'll realize flubbed again, but for now all she can think is 'If you were going to say something like this, you could have at least warned me!' ]
no subject
Well, there you go.
[He picks up his belt and his deck. The deck goes in his pocket and the belt goes over his shoulder.]
See you guys later. I'm planning to come back here, real soon.
no subject
[ So she gets up ] Then, you'll also be seeing me again! [ and bows to them. ] Thank you for your time.

Several months ago, I made a statement that I knew to be true. I said that Ryozanpaku would ascend to the top of the Super Junior League.
Tonight, that statement has come true. My students have repeatedly shown themselves in this league to have the most drive, the most motivation, the most tenacity, the greatest strength physically and mentally and the most skill with their cards.
Ryozanpaku took several young duelists with infinite potential, young duelists that would have been rejected by the Leo Duel School or Duel Academy due to lack of finance, lack of prestige, troubles with authorities. Ryozanpaku's teaching methods made these students into elite duelists and now, Ryozanpaku stands on the top of this league as its champions, as I said it would.
There can be no comparison any longer. Leo Duel School and Duel Academy, vanity projects by billionaires, produce duelists who are weak in mind and weak in body. All of the very best duelists those schools could produce lay defeated, tonight, with nothing but excuses for their own shortcomings. Their time is over. It is Ryozanpaku's time to decide the future of dueling.
[He stands up and leaves without taking a single question.]
no subject
He's asked about his duel with Sora.]
Next time you want to start talking about hunting foxes, you should ask yourself a question.
Who's the fox and who's the hunter.
Just like your allies. When you duel me, you're the fox.
[He holds up his hand to the camera. His red scarf is still wrapped around it.]
You know where I am if you want to go again.
[He leaves on that note.]

Jinn frankly looks quite awkward already. He's never been that great at interviews. He's trying his best to appear casually anyway, the interview is clearly taking place in the station's office.]
Thank you for meeting with us again.
Well, ah, it's no problem. If I can give any insightful commentary, I'm happy to.
So what do you think of the duels so far.
I think they've been really impressive.
They have been. Last time we talked about your perspective on Ryozanpaku as a former duelist and athlete. Has your stance on the school changed at all?
Not really.
Really? Even after all the duels, including Isao Kachidoki's behavior?
Let me clear the record here. My criticisms were never levelled at the students of Ryozanpaku. They're kids doing their best with what they've been taught, and they're seeing great results. I just question whether the methods of the school are benefitting them or holding them back.
So your criticisms are about the owner of Ryozanpaku and his philosophy?
I guess so? He talks a good piece, but at the end of the day he's pushing these kids down a road I'm not sure is good for them, in the short or long term. I think it might be beneficial for the students and that school to have the rug pulled out from under them and re-evaluate their approaches. Nobody ever challenges someone who's getting results, y'know? Action dueling might not be in vogue forever. I was a riding duelist, y'know. And even in America and Europe, where roads are more plentiful, it's still clearly secondary to standing dueling, and to action dueling. If that happens with Action dueling, it'd be a shame if these kids were so limited in their skill set.
Are you speaking from experience there?
Ha, well, you could say something like that. I'd be lying if I said I didn't wish riding dueling was more popular.
So your suggestion is the success of Ryozanpaku is causing people to turn a blind-eye to the negatives?
That's always how it is. In everything. Star quarterback runs record yards in a season and everyone looks away when he punches someone in a bar. Heavyweight Champion has a temper and can't stop causing property damage, money gets thrown at it until it goes away. Get results and people ignore everything they can, especially if they're benefitting from your results.
[The interview continues at this point for a bit, with Jinn rather tactfully avoiding directly condemning Isabel for her uh, everything, and openly calling Vesik a worthless thug, before once again denying any desire to return to active pro dueling.]
